The Price of a Point

Football applies the same scoring increments as basketball -- 1, 2, and 3 points -- plus a puzzling one of its own -- 6 points. 

In basketball, points being scored correspond roughly to the difficulty and risk of a given shot. Baseball, too, scores its runs in units of 1 through 4 that relate inversely to the likelihood of various opportunities arising in play.
